Oak Box containing the Ellen Terry Series of Shakespeare's works. 7" x 5" x 2"
Brass hinges to rear with a brass clasp to front centre. Inside the lid is a pasted paper (that is only fractionally smaller than the interior lid) that states "The Ellen Terry Shakespeare in Forty Volumes" plus the list of the books. The books are bound in suede in a muted harlequin selection of brown & tan & olive hues. Each has a heraldic style shield with a bird atop stamped on the front and with a black linear stamp runs around the edge of front. spine and rear. The titles in gilt to the spine and all edges gilt.
The books appear to have never been opened as the gilt
edges are immaculate and the interiors pristine. The only very minor point being that the spines have been slightly
faded by age/light. The box itself is varnished in high gloss which is unusual for any of Bryce 'boxed' sets. And is likely a later amateurish application? It is otherwise virtually mint.
Fine. Not a known boxed-set. Sold by a collector in a public auction at Bonhams, 9th November 2022.
