viii, 698 pages, plus 16 page publisher's catalogue (dated 1884); line illustrations. Owner's neat, ink signature on front paste-down endpaper. Booksellers ink stamp on front free end-paper (S.H. Lazarus, 116 New Oxford Street, London, W.C.). Mild sporadic foxing, more concentrated on title page, as is common. 14.5 x 21 cm. Original, embossed brown cloth, head and tail of spine slightly worn, edges, hinges and corners very slightly worn- overall in very good condition. Huxley had little formal schooling and was virtually self-taught. He became perhaps the finest comparative anatomist of the later 19th century. He worked on invertebrates, clarifying relationships between groups previously little understood. Huxley spent over twenty years writing this textbook on the comparative anatomy of invertebrates, the companion to his Anatomy of Vertebrated Animals (1871). The Royal Society, who had elected him as Fellow when he was 25 (1851), awarded him the Royal Medal the next year (1852), a year before Charles Darwin got the same award. He was the youngest biologist to receive such recognition. Then later in life came the Copley Medal in 1888 and the Darwin Medal in 1894; the Geological Society awarded him the Wollaston Medal in 1876; the Linnean Society awarded him the Linnean Medal in 1890.
