32mo. Engraved title- 24 printed pages with 12 finely engraved plates; four pages and two plates -11 & 14- duplicated and bound in at beginning and end of the 24 pages (very slight foxing). All text within double ruled, borders. Bound with 24 page song lyrics based on the classical Greek myths; printed on similar watermarked paper and with identical double ruled borders. Bound with 28 printed pages of the "French Revolutionary Calendar", created during the Revolution - a slight misnomer, since, in France, it is known as the calendrier républicain as well as the calendrier révolutionnaire. Bound at the end with a calendar for l'An III. 8 contemporary blank leaves before calendar. Engraved heraldic bookplate of Sir David Lionel Salomons. All edges gilt. Binding 67 x 110 mm. Printed surface 46 x 85 mm. Contemporary burgundy red morocco (slightly rubbed, front hinge slightly split, corners bumped), richly patinated. Spine in compartments with classical garlanded urns in gilt with rolling hand-tooled decorative borders. Covers with triple filet gilt borders. Three original morocco loops for keeping the almanac closed (original pin no longer present). Salomons (1851-1925) was a scientist with a fabulous watch collection who owned the second ever car in Britain and organised the first ever car show in the world. This edition was the 3rd year of the only legal calendar during the Republic that lasted just 14 years. Grand-Carteret says the almanac itself began circa 1798. Cohen-De Ricci, 34.
