Contemporary ink inscription on front free endpaper, dated 1840. Provenance: Mary Hall. Last seven leaves lower corners defective to margins, only one or two letters of print lacking. 27 x 32 mm. Original red roan. Gilt ruled borders and gilt floral decoration with horizontal ruled gilt lines on the spine. Edges and corners very slightly rubbed. These short Bible extracts, one for each day of the year, were highly appreciated by the Victorians and so they went into about 40 editions from about 1830. According to Bondy, this title "belongs to the best-loved miniature books, and was obviously much treasured by our Victorian ancestors." At least 34 editions were published in England, making it the most common miniature book of the first half of the 19th Century. The earlier editions are less commonly found today. Bondy, 127.
